In the early 1990s the fighting game was in heyday. Capcoms Street Fighter II had taken the world by storm and every company wanted a piece of the pie. One of these famous companies name was Namco who already had success in the arcade with games like Pac-Man and Galaga. They decided to enter the fray with their own fighting game, Tekken. The game featured polygonal graphics, which a novelty at the time and it featured a roster of unique and interesting characters. It was first fighting games to use 3D movement, which added a whole new dimension to the genre. The success of Tekken in arcades led to it being ported to home consoles. The first home release was for the PlayStation in 1995. The game was a success on consoles as well, and it helped to solidify Namco’s place in the fighting game genre.

Tekken 1 is a fighting game released in arcades in December 1994 and for the PlayStation in 1995. Tekken 1 consists of 10 playable characters are:
Heihachi Mishima: Heihachi Mishima, the patriarch of the Mishima Zaibatsu, aspires to become the richest man in the world while rebuilding his business.
Kazuya Mishima: Heihachi estranged son and Kazuya Mishima was thrown off a cliff by his father as a child. He was saved by a doctor who implanted a devil gene inside him, giving him supernatural strength. He enters the first King of Iron Fist Tournament to get revenge on Heihachi.
Nina Williams: A cold-blooded Irish assassin employed by the Mishima Zaibatsu, Nina Williams is ordered by Heihachi to kill Kazuya. However, she falls in love with him and betrays the Mishima Zaibatsu.
Paul Phoenix: A self-taught martial artist from Seattle, Washington, Paul Phoenix enters the first King of Iron Fist Tournament in order to prove he is the strongest fighter in the world.
Marshall Law: A martial arts master and owner of a chain of martial arts dojos, Marshall Law enters the first King of Iron Fist Tournament to pay off his debts. Law's son, Forest Law, also appears in the game as a sub-boss.
King: A Brazilian capoeira fighter, King enters the first King of Iron Fist Tournament to raise money for an orphanage she runs.
Yoshimitsu: A samurai warrior from the Manji Clan, Yoshimitsu enters the first King of Iron Fist Tournament to avenge the death of his clan's leader.
Bryan Fury: A former Interpol detective, Bryan Fury is a cyborg who was created by the Mishima Zaibatsu. He enters the first King of Iron Fist Tournament to find and kill Heihachi Mishima.
Lee Chaolan: The adopted son of Heihachi Mishima and Kazuya's childhood friend, Lee Chaolan enters the first King of Iron Fist Tournament to prove his worth to his father.
Ganryu: A sumo wrestler from Japan, Ganryu enters the first King of Iron Fist Tournament to win the heart of his Meisu, a woman he is obsessed with.
